How To Make A Title Page For A University Research Paper

Making a title page is, in fact, a very easy task. It takes several minutes. Therefore, you should do it correctly. It is the most important part of the whole work. Judging by the cover, the reader might decide on the quality of the whole work. So, to make a good first impression, you need to pay special attention to the first page.

For designing the first page, use the APA style standards. Here are some tips on how to follow these standards correctly:

  1. Place the page header at the top of the page.
    • The page header, or the “running head”, is the shortened version of the title.
    • Make it flush left.
    • After the words “Running head”, put a colon, and write the brief version of your title in all capital letters.
    • Make sure the page header contains 50 characters or less, including spaces and punctuation.
    • Resist the temptation to provide the whole title; choose the most important words.
  2. Indicate the page number in Arabic numerals.
    • Indicate the page number at the top of the page in the line with the page header.
    • Make it flush right.
  3. Write the full title of your research paper.
    • Place it in the upper half of the page.
    • Make it centered.
    • Start it with a capital letter.
    • Capitalize the first letter of each word, except for conjunctions, articles, and prepositions that contain three letters or less.
    • Capitalize the first letter in both parts of a hyphenated word.
    • Do not bold, italicize, or underline it.
    • Make your title up to 12 words long.
    • Avoid abbreviations and unnecessary words.
    • Place it in one or two lines.
    • Make sure the title is concise and includes the question researched throughout the paper.
  4. Indicate the first name, middle initials, and the last name of the author.
    • Place this information under the title.
    • Titles or degrees should not be included.
  5. Provide the institutional affiliation.
  • Indicate the institution where the author carried out the research.
  • Place it under the author’s name.

Besides the above-mentioned requirements, there are some general guidelines:

  1. Use 8.5 x 11 inches paper.
  2. Use 12-point Times New Roman font.
  3. Make the whole text, including the first page, double-spaced.
  4. Make all margins 1 inch wide.

Remember that creating the first page is a very responsible task. Mind even the slightest details to avoid mistakes. Follow the above-mentioned recommendations in order to succeed in creating a correct and appealing title page.
